Strange symmetry in Star Trek movies
I loved the new Star Trek movie so much I watched it twice the first weekend it was out. The new movie also made me curious about the old Star Trek movies, which I watched so long ago that I'd forgotten what they were about. I've watched I through IV and I think I'll stop there.
The odd thing I noticed was that in Star Trek I, a character was sort of left behind at the end, and in Star Trek IV, a character was picked up by the crew and brought along with them. It turns out that the actor who played the character left behind in the first movie played the dad in Seventh Heaven (not that I watched that show, I just remember the previews for it on TV). And the actress who played the character who was picked up by the crew in Star Trek IV went on to play the mom in Seventh Heaven. I thought it was a curious coincidence.

the fundamentals
If someone claims to have taken a digital image processing class, how can they claim to have never heard of the Nyquist theorem?! There wasn't even a flicker of recognition when I said it referred to the minimum sampling frequency needed to be able to reconstruct a signal without loss. What are they teaching kids these days?

Star Trek
I love the new Star Trek movie. I like the optimistic future that Star Trek envisions in general, but this movie was just really fun! Everyone in Star Fleet is really, really smart. The smart, nice people are in charge and society has figured out how to solve all the big problems (energy, poverty, space travel, etc.). I think we will ultimately end up in a Star Trek universe or in a Mad Max universe. I'd much prefer my great-grandkids to join Star Fleet than a roving post-apocalyptic gang.
