Syntax > Grammar?
I'm back to writing, with a fresh perspective on life! Grad school is still...yep, it's sitting still and it is still what it has always been - whatever that is. I know I'm not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition, but I've decided to focus on my coding syntax instead of my grammar, because computers are not forgiving like people! Sometimes I wish communicating with people was as easy as an if/then/else statement. Two possible inputs lead to two direct results, with no feelings to complicate things. There is no intonation in code, no subtle inferences made by the computer. Although, if we took away the unintentional ambiguity in speech, I think we would also miss out on a lot of the hope in the world too, which I quite enjoy. And if we were dismissing emotion altogether - well, I really don't think I want to live in a world without love...
...A world without code, however, is another thing. It would mean I would be out of a job, but it would also mean I wouldn't be out of my mind so much! I'm fighting constantly with my code(s). Sometimes it's a semicolon out of place - *grumble grumble*, and sometimes it's whole sections of logic that I keep second guessing. When there are 4 different algorithms for something, who is to say which is the best routine? Well - I guess I'm supposed to be the one to figure that out. Hmmm... Back to work then!

Chocolate Salon
Went to a Chocolate Salon with some friends today. It goes under the good food festival column in my book. Every single vendor's booth had samples and most were very fancy and tasty chocolates, including several organic and fair trade ones. Had to drink lots of water and took a couple of breaks to let my taste buds recover, but I think I tried something from pretty much all the booths and even started my holiday gift shopping!
Chocolate tasting is a fabulous way to spend a Sunday. I'm set for the week!

SIGG debacle
I just read an article about older SIGG bottles having a lining that contains BPA. I was one of the suckers who bought a couple of SIGG bottles when the paranoia about BPA leaching from plastic bottles was around and now it turns out that the SIGG bottles I bought had BPA in them too, they just kept mum about it.
Since I bought my bottles at REI, I went back and was able to exchange my old SIGG bottles for newer ones with a lining that SIGG claims does not have BPA. You can also mail your old bottles to SIGG to get new ones by following these instructions. They're calling it an exchange program, not a recall, because they claim their old liners didn't leach BPA even though they contained BPA.
To see if you have the old or new liner, look inside your bottles and compare with this picture.
At this point, though, do I even trust SIGG's claim that their new liner is safe or eco-friendly? Why do the bottles even need liners anyway? I've seen other metal bottles that don't have liners.
