baking failures
For the past few weeks, most of my baking has been cursed. The last three loaves of bread I tried to make failed to rise at all. And the scones I made a couple of weeks ago looked great, but tasted horrible, even though I followed the same recipe I've made at least half a dozen times successfully before. I also attempted to make Yorkshire pudding after watching someone make it on the Food Network. They looked great in the oven, but deflated as they cooled when I took them out. Sigh...
The current batch of flour I've been using was my primary suspect until I made some cookies that miraculously turned out good, so I have no idea why I've been messing up my baking.
Maybe a new year means a fresh baking start.

Happy New Year
Rice, toast, ginger ale. Stomach flu. Things can only get better.

Tulipov!
I've almost finished reading "The Decorator", the second story in Boris Akunin's "Special Assignments" (I don't know if "The Jack of Spades" and "The Decorator" were originally published as two separate books, but it seems like they should have been). The story is so tragic and so good that I am only reading a couple of pages at a time -- I don't want it to end! -- especially because I don't know if there are any more Fandorin books after this one. I've already ordered all the ones I found on Amazon. I'm pretty sure Erast will survive, but what if he decides to retire after all that has happened in this last novel?
