2:42am where I am. Just a general thread if anyone has nothing else to do (well, nothing else they want to do).
[edit] Gosh, I guess I actually have to have a topic in order for people to respond to my thread.
So here's the poll. Leave a message at the beep.

I completely understand how you feel. That's what I do too. I get bored at night, and decide to start a new topic.
Anyways, I chose 'yes'. Only because I have to convince myself of it in order to get through the next few months.
However, despite the fact that I'll soon have a PhD (knock on wood) I'm not sure I'll ever become one of the 'absolute elite' in the field... |

| It's ten am and I'm starting to fall asleep at my computer. I do have an excuse though; I've spent about 30 hours travelling this weekend, 13 of them last night on a coach. I really really can't sleep on coaches, so now I am totally shattered... |

Not that it's pertinent, but what do you mean by 'coach'? It's not a common word for transportation in the U.S.
I looked it up in the dictionary and got the following results:
A horse-drawn carriage
A railroad passenger car
A bus
A trailer
A 2-door automobile
A cabin in an airplane
Quite amusing actually. |

Thanks for the clarification. Now get some sleep man!
It's interesting how obvious it can be to tell people's nationality simply by their posts. But I'd better shut up before I get the linguists going.

I voted 'no', but figure it could use some explanation. It's not that I don't think this will all be worth it in the end (it will... right?. Like dmscvan, I have to believe it will). It's just that I'm not a hugely ambitious sort. I admire and envy people who are motivated to make sacrifices for the sake of being the very best at what they do. But my motivation is more from the (anticipated) sense of personal accomplishment, and my 'striving for glory' is more of a plain old plugging away at something I'm apparently well suited for. I don't think I'll ever hit elite linguist status though.
That's not to say I don't get a giddy little kick out of the idea of being Dr Me in the end.

| Some days it seems worth it, other days it doesn't. So I'm not going to vote since it depends so completely on the day. |

I have to believe it is, otherwise I've just wasted three years (and more) of my life... |
